MEDICINE HAT, AB – On a Saturday night at the Kinplex, the Red Vipers squared off against the Medicine Hat Cubs. The Vipers gave rookie Brandon Bilodeau the start in net, while the Cubs countered with Dan Maier.
Red Deer opened with the games first scoring chance less than five minutes into the game. Forward Kale Lapointe burst into the zone and snapped a quick shot on net that rang off the crossbar and out of the play. Less than a minute later though, the Vipers would breakthrough for the game’s opening tally. From the point, Captain Conner Veroba threw a shot a goal that was deflected by Colton Weseen past the Medicine Hat goaltender. The Cubs would find the tying marker near the end of the first period as Matt Clement broke in alone on a shorthanded breakaway and snuck one through the legs of Bilodeau. Medicine Hat would then take the lead less than a minute after as Dorien Bernhart’s shot of the right corner eluded the Vipers’ goaltender and found its way into the net. After 20 minutes of the play, the scoreboard read 2-1 in favor of the Cubs.
The Vipers would find themselves down a man for an extended period of time to start the second period, but strong penalty killing would negate the opportunity. Red Deer continued to press for the remainder of the period which saw several crossbars and posts, but would finally get their second with five minutes remaining in the second. On the man advantage, Weseen corralled the puck in the slot and rifled a shot over the glove of Maier to send the teams to the dressing room tied 2-2 after two periods.
Just over three minutes in the final frame, the Vipers would retake the lead on rookie Bailey Lawson’s first Heritage Junior B goal. Off a faceoff in the left circle, Lawson make a dangle past the centreman before firing one shortside past the Cubs netminder. Red Deer then jumped up 4-2 just over two minutes later as
