Red
Deer, AB – On a Sunday evening at the Red Deer Arena, the Red
Deer Vipers welcomed the Banff Academy Bears in the first of two meetings this
season. Mack Patchett took to the Vipers’ net, while the Bears countered with
Adas Pietrasik.
The
game opened with the Vipers controlling the first half of the period as they
built up an 11-1 edge in shots after 10 minutes. Red Deer’s sustained pressure
would pay off as Bailey Lawson knocked home a loose rebound in the crease to
put the home side in front 1-0. Banff would respond shortly after as Mitchell
Wainman broke down the right wing and fired a shot past the outstretched
blocker of Patchett. The Vipers would regain their lead only minutes later as
the puck found the stick of Nick Glackin in the slot who quickly fired it
between the legs of Pietrasik to put Red Deer up 2-1. The home team continued
to attack, and notched two quick tallies near the end of the frame. First,
Glackin dangled into the offensive zone and found Matt Krusky in the slot who
rifled a shot into the top corner, past the glove of the Bears’ netminder.
Colton Weseen then collected Red Deer’s fourth goal on the man advantage with
seconds left on the clock as he unleashed a rocket from the right circle that
rang off the crossbar and past Pietrasik. After 20 minutes of play, the Vipers
held a 4-1 lead.
The
opening half of the middle frame saw Red Deer continue to dictate the play as
the shot clock read 24-3 in the favor of the Vipers. Red Deer forward Drew
Joslin would add to the scoring just before the 10 minute mark as he capitalized
shorthanded on a miscue in the Bears’ defensive zone to push the score to 5-1.
Dominic Vollenwear would replace Pietrasik in the Banff crease after the fifth
tally. Joslin’s goal would be the only marker of the period as the teams headed
to the dressing rooms with the Vipers up 5-1.
The
Bears returned Pietrasik to the net for the start of the final period. Red Deer
notched their sixth goal of the game just past the halfway mark of the period
as Avery Weenik and Weseen broke in on a 2-on-0 shorthanded break. From the
left side, Weenik slid the puck over to Weseen who fired a quick shot through
the legs of the Banff netminder to increase the Vipers lead to 6-1. Declan
Johnson notched the Vipers seventh of the night after a nice individual effort
down the left-hand boards before Red Deer’s Kale Lapointe and the Bears’ Blaise
Arkle traded goals late in the game to round out the scoring. Vipers 8 Bears 2
Red
Deer outshot Banff 42-11.
The
Vipers will now travel to Stettler on Friday, October 9th for a date
with the Lightning. Red Deer will then return home to the Red Deer Arena on
Saturday, October 17th when the Medicine Hat Cubs come to town. Puck
drop is set for 8:00 PM.
